    NORMAN, Okla. – Florida Southern’s John Coultas and John VanDerLaan have been named to the 2017 All-Nicklaus Team that was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Thursday, June 29. The 24-man team honors the best collegiate players in the country from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as the NAIA and NJCAA.

    ATLANTA, GA - Moccasin junior John Coultas helped Team USA to a championship win at the 2017 Palmer Cup held here at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Coultas was one of just two players from the NCAA Division II competing in the event. Team USA defeated Team Europe, 19.5 to 10.5.

  • Coultas Repeats as Academic All-American, Earning 2017 First Team Status

    Florida Southern men’s golfer John Coultas has been selected as a First Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), moving up from the Second Team of which he was a member in 2016. Coultas earned his spot on the Men's At-Large Team, which covers the sports of swimming, tennis, golf, lacrosse, ice hockey, skiing, wrestling, gymnastics, rifle, water polo, fencing, and volleyball. He is one of two Florida Southern student-athletes on that team this year, joining senior swimmer Diego Gimenez who was also a First Team selection.

    KISSIMMEE, FL – There were a lot of nervous souls in the audience at Reunion Resort’s Watson course Friday afternoon when Florida Southern sophomore Christian Anderson stepped on to the 18th green. Already down one point in the match, the Moccasins couldn’t afford to give away another one, and Anderson was all square with Lynn University’s Mateo Gomez. For the Knights, it was a chance to drop the hammer. Instead, Anderson delivered for the Moccasins, winning the hole and his individual match by one stroke, swinging everything to Florida Southern’s favor in the process. When juniors John VanDerLaan and John Coultas picked up their own wins a little bit later, Florida Southern had a 3-2 win over Lynn that gives the Moccasins the 13th national title in team history.
  • Florida Southern Moves Into National Semifinals With 5-0 Win Over Ferris State

    KISSIMMEE, FL – The semifinals of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships are set and Florida Southern is one of the four teams still alive. The 4th-ranked and 2nd-seeded Moccasins prevailed in their quarterfinal match over 7th-seeded Ferris State (MI) by winning all five individual matches for a 5-0 victory. That sends them into Thursday afternoon’s semifinals where they will face top-ranked and 3rd-seeded West Florida, a 4-1 win over the sixth seed, Newberry (SC).
  • Moccasins Down Top-Ranked West Florida 3-2 to Advance to National Championship Match; FSC to Face Lynn on Friday

    KISSIMMEE, FL – Back in October, 18 teams visited Reunion Resort for a tournament dubbed the NCAA Division II National Preview. A little over seven months later, it turns out that title was right on the mark. Playing on the same course they did more than seven months ago, when they met for the first time this season, the same teams at the top of those standings are all that’s left in Division II men’s golf as 4th-ranked Florida Southern and 2nd-ranked Lynn will go head-to-head one more time on Friday for the national championship.
  • Florida Southern Heads to Match Play as No. 2 Seed in NCAA Division II National Championships; Coultas Finishes as Individual Runner-Up

    KISSIMMEE, FL – Going into the final round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships, Florida Southern was 18 shots in the clear to advance to the match play portion of the tournament, but the Moccasins weren’t content with just getting there. By shooting a 291 under tough conditions at Reunion Resort, the Moccasins moved up two spots in the final standings of stroke play to finish second and earn the No. 2 seed for match play where they will face No. 7 seed Ferris State (MI) on Thursday morning at 8:20.
  • Coultas and John VanDerLaan Named PING First Team All-Americans by Golf Coaches Association of America

    One day after earning All-South Region honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America, John Coultas and John VanDerLaan earned another honor from the GCAA when they were each named PING First Team All-Americans. It’s the third All-American award for both golfers, who led Florida Southern to a second place finish in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Division II National Championships and a spot in the national quarterfinals.

    KISSIMMEE, FL – With Florida Southern sitting in fourth place going into the second round of the NCAA Division II National Championships, the Moccasins got an early start Tuesday morning as they sought to strengthen their hold on one of the eight positions that would qualify for Thursday’s national quarterfinals. The results were somewhat mixed for the Mocs, but nevertheless, strengthen it they did. Paced once more by tournament individual leader John Coultas, Florida Southern had a two-over par 282 that nearly matched their first-round score and allowed them to remain fourth, though with a much wider margin over the rest of the field.

    KISSIMMEE, FL – Day one of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Men’s Golf Championships saw the South Region take control of the team standings with five teams right at the top, and Florida Southern’s John Coultas take control of the individual leaderboard with a five-under par 65. That score, along with a 70 from Michael VanDerLaan helped put the Moccasins in fourth place at the end of the day, six shots behind first-place Barry.

    Monday morning marks the start of the 2017 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships and the Florida Southern Moccasins would have to be considered among the favorites to win the national title. Ranked No. 4 in the country, Florida Southern is one of 20 teams competing for the title at Reunion Resort in nearby Kissimmee, playing as close to home as they possibly could without the tournament actually being held in Lakeland.

    Florida Southern golfer John Coultas has been voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team for the second year in a row for his accomplishments both on the course and in the class room. The men’s at-large team is comprised of student-athletes in the sports of swimming, tennis, golf, lacrosse, ice hockey, skiing, wrestling, gymnastics, rifle, water polo, fencing, and volleyball. Coultas was one of two Moccasins on the men’s at-large team, with senior swimmer Diego Gimenez the other. Gimenez is also on the Academic All-District squad for the second year in a row.
  • John VanDerLaan Voted Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golfer-of-the-Year; Coultas Joins Him on All-SSC First Team

    MELBOURNE, FL – Florida Southern juniors John VanDerLaan and John Coultas have both been voted First Team All-Sunshine State Conference, and VanDerLaan is the SSC Men’s Golfer-of-the-Year in voting by league men’s golf coaches. It’s the third year in a row VanDerLaan and Coultas have both made the All-SSC Team, and each of them has now won the league’s Golfer-of-the-Year award once in their respective careers.

    MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – Only a few hours after being named the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golfer-of-the-Year, junior John VanDerLaan added another trophy to his mantle and led a Florida Southern charge on the final day of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional that gave the Moccasins a runner-up finish and a spot in the 2017 Division II National Finals. VanDerLaan came from behind Wednesday with a final-round 65 to win the individual title with a 15-under par 201 that was the best score ever at a South or South/Southeast Regional.

    MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – Top-ranked West Florida grabbed the lead from 2nd-ranked Lynn, 4th-ranked Florida Southern held off a charge from 6th-ranked Florida Tech to remain third, and the Moccasins were able to add a little more cushion to the score they would need to move on to the National Finals with one round remaining in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional.

    MUSCLE SHOALS, AL – In a regional field loaded with nine top-10 teams, and all of the top-five, the top five teams on day one of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional were pretty much as expected. Second-ranked Lynn sat at the top of the standings, top-ranked West Florida was two shots back in second place, and 4th-ranked Florida Southern was third, trailing the front-running Knights by five shots.
  • Moccasin Men's Golf Team Opens Play in NCAA South/Southeast Regional on Monday

    The Florida Southern men’s golf team begins play in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional on Monday morning in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with the Moccasins making their 40th consecutive appearance in the NCAA postseason and 45th overall. Ten teams from the South Region and ten from the Southeast make up the tournament field, along with eight individual qualifiers. The top seven teams and two best individuals not with one of the advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Division II National Finals.

Still at No. 4 in the national rankings, the Moccasins have gone through the entire 2016-17 season in the top five.

    NORMAN, OK – Two Florida Southern Moccasins were among the 30 golfers named as semifinalists for the 2017 Division II Jack Nicklaus National Player-of-the-Year Award, which was announced Friday, April 28 by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Making the list from Florida Southern were juniors John Coultas and John VanDerLaan, and 10 of the 30 golfers were from the Sunshine State Conference.

    MELBOURNE – A 68 in the final round Tuesday gave junior John VanDerLaan a runner-up finish at the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Championships, while 4th-ranked Florida Southern had a team score of 295 to place fifth as a team. Barry won the league title with a 14-under par 850, putting the 2nd-ranked Buccaneers six shots ahead of second-place and 25th-ranked Saint Leo.

  • Battle-Tested Moccasins Ready for 2017 SSC Men’s Golf Championships

    The Florida Southern men’s golf team begins postseason play this weekend at the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Championships at Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, with Florida Tech serving as host for the 3-day tournament. It’s the third time the SSC Championships have been held at Duran with the first two coming back-to-back in 2007 and 2008. It will be the Moccasins’ second visit to Duran this year, with their first resulting in a win at the Panther Invitational in early March.
