  • Rain-Delayed Opening Round Wraps up With Florida Southern Third & Coultas Tied for First at SSC Men's Golf Championships

    DAVIE, FL – Day one of the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Championships took a little longer to complete than originally planned, but Florida Southern rode it out, and then rode under-par scores by senior John Coultas and freshman Jacob Penny into third place at the end of day. With Coultas tied for the individual lead at three-under par 68, and Penny in the top-10 as well, the 2nd-ranked Moccasins are just four shots back of 5th-ranked Florida Tech, and two behind 4th-ranked Barry.
  • Postseason Play Begins for Men's Golf Team at 2018 Sunshine State Conference Championships

    Following one of the best regular seasons in team history, Florida Southern embarks on its final postseason tour under retiring head coach Doug Gordin this week as the 2nd-ranked Moccasins open play in the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Championships. This year’s tournament is being played at Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie with Nova Southeastern University serving as host. The only previous time the SSC Championships were held there in 2010, the Moccasins won the league title with a score of -17 before going on to win the NCAA Division II National Championship.

    MELBOURNE, FL – John VanDerLaan has added another Sunshine State Conference Player-of-the-Week award to his collection as the senior from Southbury, Connecticut earned that honor for the fifth time this season and the seventh time in his career. This occasion comes following another playoff win at The Battle at the Shores hosted by Barry University, in which VanDerLaan and fellow senior All-American John Coultas led Florida Southern to a one-shot win over Lynn.

    MIAMI BEACH, FL – In the final tournament of the regular season, last year’s national champion and national runner-up geared up for another postseason run with a back-and-forth battle that wasn’t decided until the final hole. When it was, 2nd-ranked Florida Southern had come out one shot ahead of 7th-ranked Lynn at -13, and two Moccasin senior All-Americans were headed to a playoff for the individual title. On that extra hole, John VanDerLaan edged John Coultas with an eagle for his fifth win of the season.

    MIAMI BEACH, FL – John VanDerLaan turned in a pair of 66s Monday to open up a five-stroke lead for the individual title, and a late second-round eagle by Christian Anderson helped propel Florida Southern to a two-shot lead in the team standings on day one of The Battle at the Shores.

West Florida still holds the top position, marking the sixth straight poll in which the Argonauts have been No. 1, and the fourth where West Florida and Florida Southern have been 1-2.

    LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College inducted five new members to its Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday evening during its 16th annual Hall of Fame Banquet at Jenkins Field House. The five-member class included Pete Meyer (baseball), Jordan McAfee (volleyball), Matt Stauch (men's golf), Mary O'Sullivan (women's swimming), and David Jenkins (honorary).
  • Second Straight Playoff for VanDerLaan Gives Moccasin Senior Fourth Win of the Season; FSC Finishes Fourth as a Team at Bobcat Invitational

    EATONTON, GA – For the second week in a row, Florida Southern’s John VanDerLaan ended up in a playoff for medalist honors at another tournament where the competition was the best of the best in Division II men’s golf. This one didn’t go nearly as long as the first one did, but it resulted in a win for VanDerLaan who parred two playoff holes to defeat South Carolina-Aiken’s Johnson Holliday for his fourth win of the season and eighth of his career.

    EATONTON, GA – With John VanDerLaan putting together two rounds in the 60s, and Michael VanDerLaan carding a pair of 71s, 2nd-ranked Florida Southern finished the first day of the Bobcat Invitational in third place and within striking distance of tournament-leading No. 14 South Carolina-Aiken. The Moccasins’ total score of 564 on the par-70 course at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee put them seven shots behind the Pacers, and three behind second-place Barry.
  • Unbelievable Playoff Decides Southeastern Collegiate Medalist Honors; Florida Southern Ties for Fifth Overall

    VALDOSTA, GA – It may not have been the national championship tournament, but the 2018 Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State sure had that feel to it with all of the top-10 teams in the NCAA Division II coaches poll among the participants. Even when the dust settled after Newberry’s one-shot win over West Florida, it really wasn’t over. Instead, West Florida’s Chandler Blanchet and Florida Southern’s John VanDerLaan embarked on a marathon playoff to decide medalist honors, with Blanchet finally winning on the eighth extra hole.

The Moccasins and Buccaneers are two of the seven teams within 10 shots of first place, and trail the co-leaders West Florida and Newberry by six.

    VALDOSTA, GA – With John Coultas shooting a three-under-par 69, and John VanDerLaan adding a two-under-par 70, 2nd-ranked Florida Southern finished the first day of the Southeastern Collegiate tied for sixth place with a team score of 286 (-2). The tournament hosted by Valdosta State features the entire top-10 in the current NCAA Division II national coaches poll along with three other top-20 teams.

    VIERA, FL – Florida Southern went into the final round of the Panther Invitational holding a 10-shot lead over Barry, a not-insurmountable lead, but the way the Moccasins have been playing so far this spring, it might as well have been. After first riding the hot hand of freshman Jacob Penny on the front nine, 2nd-ranked Florida Southern widened the gap over the back nine for a 15-shot win over the 6th-ranked Buccaneers with John VanDerLaan pulling away from John Coultas to win the individual title by two strokes.
  • Coultas Has Company at the Top as John VanDerLaan Pulls Even for Front-Running Moccasins at Panther Invitational

    VIERA, FL – Beginning play Monday in the second round of the Panther Invitational, the top three golfers were Florida Southern’s John Coultas in first, Florida Tech’s Max O’Hagan in second, and Florida Southern’s John VanDerLaan tied for third. Those same three golfers are still in the top three spots heading into Tuesday’s final round, and even with both Moccasin golfers shooting in the 60s, VanDerLaan was able to pull even with his teammate to help push 2nd-ranked Florida Southern’s lead to 10 shots over No. 6 Barry in the team standings.

    LAKELAND, FL – Before the start of this year’s Matlock Collegiate Classic, Florida Southern head coach Doug Gordin talked not only about what it would take for the Moccasins to win the tournament but also about all the memories from previous Matlocks in his 23 years leading the Mocs. He closed by saying he hoped to make one more great memory in the final home tournament of his career. That hope became a reality Tuesday at Lone Palm Golf Club where the 2nd-ranked Moccasins pulled away from No. 12 Barry over the final nine holes to win the Matlock by six shots.

    LAKELAND, FL – In a field crowded with top-flight teams and numerous All-Americans, Florida Southern seniors John VanDerLaan and John Coultas rose to the top Monday on the first day of the Matlock Collegiate Classic. With Coultas shooting a 65 in round one and VanDerLaan shooting a 65 in round two, the two senior All-Americans led the 2nd-ranked Moccasins to a team score of 20-under par and a five-shot lead over No. 12 Barry with one round remaining.
  • 37th Annual Matlock Collegiate Classic Begins Monday with the Entire Top-Five in Division II Among the Participants

    LAKELAND – The Matlock Collegiate Classic, which annually draws the best NCAA Division II men’s golf teams in the country, begins Monday morning at Lone Palm Golf Club with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Now in its 37th year, the Matlock features 15 teams competing in three rounds across two days. The first two rounds are Monday, with round two beginning immediately after the conclusion of round one. Tuesday’s action gets underway with another shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
  • Gordin Receives 40-Year Service Award from the Golf Coaches Association of America

    LAS VEGAS - Florida Southern men’s golf coach Doug Gordin has received the 40-Year Service Award by the Golf Coaches Association of America at their annual convention, held this year in Las Vegas. Gordin is the only recipient of that award this year, which recognizes outstanding service to both his school and the sport of golf.

    MELBOURNE, FL – For the second time this fall and the fourth time in his career, Florida Southern senior John VanDerLaan is the Sunshine State Conference Player-of-the-Week in men’s golf. It is also the second consecutive SSC award for VanDerLaan, making him the first player in the league to earn back-to-back honors since another Moccasin golfer, Tim Crouch, did so in the spring of 2013.
  • November 1 Golfstat Rankings Have Florida Southern No. 2

    Following another impressive showing at the Miami Intercollegiate earlier this week, the Florida Southern men’s golf team has finished the fall portion of its schedule ranked second in the November 1 Golfstat rankings. Two Moccasins are also in the top-20 of the individual rankings, with senior John VanDerLaan at No. 2, and senior John Coultas at No. 18.
