Women's Tennis Splits Two Matches in Hilton Head, SC

HILTON HEAD, SC - The 15th-ranked Florida Southern women's tennis easily defeated Chowan, 8-1, to salvage a split of two matches played here Saturday. In a morning match, the Moccasins were edged, 5-4, by Newberry.

In the 5:30 p.m. match against Chowan, the Moccasins (4-3) grabbed five of the six singles matches and the swept doubles. 

In singles, Lorena Rionda, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division II easily defeated Polina Novachuk, 6-1, 6-1, at number one while Natalija Popovic downed Cynthia Carrier, 6-3, 6-2, at number two. Avery Hunter picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lenka Styblova at number five while Magda Stepnik topped Victoria Smolchenkova, 6-3, 6-2, at number three and Gabby Hesse downed Angelique Gouin, 6-2, 6-3, at number five. In the final singles match, Hanna Tarlouskaya defeated Nina Schwab, 7-6 (6-4), 3-6, 10-8, for Chowan's lone win.

In doubles, Rionda and Sasha Nionova defeated Novachuk and Carrier, 8-3, at number one while Carolyn Cureton and Katie Stanford posted an 8-4 win over Styblova and Gouin at number three. Finally, Popovic and Stepnik topped Tarlouskaya and Smolchenkova, 8-4 at number two.

Against Newberry in the 9:30 a.m. match, the two teams split the first four pairings sending the match to the ninth and final match-up in which Newberry's Marta Gomar edged Florida Southern's Lola Asis, 7-5, 6-3, giving the win to the Hawks.

The Moccasins took the final two doubles matches after Selin Devrimci and Stepnik fell, 8-3, to Elisa Aguirre and Lucia Davila at number two. Asis and Gabby Hesse picked up Florida Southern's first point with an 8-3 win over Joelle Husle and Rebecca Martinez at number three while Nionova and Rionda posted an 8-6 decision over Amanda Carrillo and Marta Gomar at number one.

In singles, Popovic lost 6-2, 6-2, to Carrillo at number one while Nina Schwab downed Davila, 7-5, 6-3 at number four. Hunter picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Martinez at number five to give the Moccasins a 4-2 lead, but Newberry got wins at number two singles as Stepnik fell, 7-6, 6-2 to Aguirre and Cureton fell, 7-6, 6-4 to Husle.

Florida Southern returns to action on Monday against Tiffin at 8 a.m. here in Hilton Head.
