LAKELAND - Florida Southern, ranked 14th in the most recent ITA NCAA Division II national rankings, downed Denison, 9-0 here Thursday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win improves the Moccasins' record to 9-4 on the season while the Big Red, ranked 35th nationally in the Division III standings, evens out at 6-6.
In doubles, Magda Stepnik and Nina Schwab defeated Madeline Hart and Megan Hickey, 8-4, at number two to improve to 7-4 as a duo while Natalija Popovic and Gabby Hesse downed Courtney Brown and Charlotte Purnode, 8-3, at number three. Selin Devrimci and Lorena Rionda completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win over Lauren Hawley and Emma Alsup at number one.
Devrimci started singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hawley at number one while Carolyn Cureton posted her first win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Devin Gramley at number six to seal the match for the Moccasins.
Hesse continued the wins with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Purnode at number five while Popovic toppled Alsup, 6-4, 7-6, at number two. Avery Hunter then recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win at number four over Hart while Stepnik beat Hickey, 6-2, 6-2, at number three for her fourth consecutive triumph. Hunter's win keeps her undefeated on the season at 6-0.
Florida Southern will play again on Monday at 3 p.m. against the Academy of Art at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
