15th-Ranked FSC Shuts Down Eckerd, 9-0

LAKELAND – Florida Southern, ranked 15th in this week's ITA NCAA Division II national poll, hosted Eckerd on Thursday and toppled the Tritons, 9-0 in Sunshine State Conference action at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win lifts the Moccasins to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the SSC while Eckerd falls to 3-11 and 0-8.

In doubles, Natalija Popovic and Gabby Hesse dispatched Laurence Bourgault and Isabella Wong, 8-1, at number three while Magda Stepnik and Nina Schwab defeated Maryann Aaron Bailey Koronich, 8-2, at number two. The 30th-ranked duo of Selin Devrimci and Lorena Rionda completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 triumph over Taylor Selby and Joyce Fields at number one.

Popovic opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Aaron at number three to record her fourth straight win and Stepnik recorded a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Bourgault at number five to seal the Moccasin victory.

Lola Asis then posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number four versus Koronich for her fifth win in the last six matches while Rionda, ranked 68th in this week's rankings, defeated Selby, 6-0, 6-0, at number one for her seventh win in her last nine matches. Devrimci bounced back from a 7-5 narrow win in the first set to drub Fields, 6-0, in the second set for her third consecutive win. Finally, Avery Hunter downed Cassidy Lear, 6-2, 6-0 at number six to remain undefeated on the season at 7-0.

Florida Southern will play at Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach Friday at 1 p.m. and then play in Miami Shore on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Barry.
