MIAMI SHORES, FL - Two nationally-ranked teams face off in Sunshine State Conference women's tennis on Saturday here at the Buccaneer Tennis Center. In the end, it was No. 2 Barry emerging with an 8-1 win over 15th-ranked Florida Southern. The Moccasins drop to 11-6 on the season and 5-4 in the SSC while the Buccaneers remain undefeated at 18-0 overall and 8-0 in the conference.
In doubles, Florida Southern's Magda Stepnik and Nina Schwab fell, 8-0, to 35th-ranked Zuza Maciejewski and Carolin Schmidt at number two and Natalija Popovic and Lorenda Rionda were edged, 8-6, by Barry's number three duo of Julie Razafindranaly and Hannah Seizer. At number one, Moccasins Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci, ranked 12th in the NCAA Division II rankings, were upset, 8-6, by Sonja Larsen and Verena Schmid.
In singles, Maciejewski was leading Popovic, 4-1, at number three but had to retire due to injury giving the Moccasins their only win of the match. At number four, Lola Asis was shut down, 6-0, 6-0, by Schmid, while at number one, Rionda, ranked 68th nationally, was topped 6-1, 6-2 by Larsen, who is ranked number two in the country.
At number five, Razafindranaly defeated Stepnik, 6-3, 6-1 and at number six, Schwab grabbed a 6-2 victory in the first set but lost the next two, 6-3 and 10-6. Finally, in a drawn-out battle, Devrimci took a 6-2 lead after the first set, but fell 7-6 in set two and was outlasted 12-10 in set three by Seizer.
