INDIANAPOLIS - Florida Southern is headed to the postseason and will the number five seed in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis South Region I Tournament and will face #4 Saint Leo on Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. at Barry University in Miami Shores. The winner of Saturday's match takes on the top-seeded Buccaneers on Sunday, April 29 at 11 a.m.
Forty-eight teams were named to the NCAA postseason at 16 different sites with 21 teams earning automatic qualifications and 27 receiving at-large berths. Each winner from the 16 Regional Tournament sites will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships, which are scheduled for May 8-11 in Suprise, Arizona.
Florida Southern, ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Division II ITA national ranking, finished the regular season with a 14-7 record. The Moccasins, who won five of their last six regular-season matches, finished third in the Sunshine State Conference record with a 7-3 record, earning the number three seed in the conference tournament where the team was upset, 5-1, by 30th ranked Nova Southeastern.
Saint Leo, ranked ninth nationally, brings an 18-6 mark into the regional, and also sported a 7-3 mark in the SSC. The Moccasins topped the Lions, 5-4, back on Feb. 21 at Saint Leo.
Barry University, the nation's top-ranked team, is riding a 53-match win streak, including a 23-0 record this season. The Buccaneers won the SSC regular season and postseason tournament this season and are the defending national champions. Barry downed Florida Southern, 8-1, on March 31.
The Moccasins are making their 17th overall trip to the NCAA postseason. Overall, Florida Southern has advanced to the national tournament in 1991 and 2007. Florida Southern last won a regional title in 2007.
