Mattson Named FSC Volleyball Team MVP

Senior Nicole Mattson has been selected as the Florida Southern volleyball team MVP by Moccasin head coach Jill Stephens (Ed. Note: Coach Stephens announced her retirement at the conclusion of the 2017 season and associate head coach Chris Keen was promoted to head coach).

Mattson, who was a first-team All-American as well as the AVCA South Region Player of the Year, finished the season ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II with 545 kills and was third in total attacks (1,588) and 23rd in kills per set (4.07). The Oviedo, Florida native recorded 20 more kills in seven different matches this past year including 21 in the opening game of the NCAA National Tournament. Named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team, Mattson registered 43 kills and 44 digs in the three matches, helping the Mocs finish as national runners-up – the highest finish in program history.

At the NCAA South Regional Mattson tallied 19 kills and hit a blistering .308 in the Mocs' championship win over West Florida.

Mattson's 545 kills this past season are the seventh most ever posted by a player at Florida Southern while her 4.07 kills per set rank eighth most. Her 1,540 total attack attempts are second only to Becky Thyhsen's 1,689 in 1991. For her career, she ranks sixth at FSC with 3.46 kills per set and is 10th with 3,294 total attack attempts.

Mattson was also named to the All-Sunshine State Conference first-team was as a three-time SSC Offensive Player of the Week. Excelling in the classroom as well, Mattson was a member of the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
