Mocs Drop Series Opener, 11-4, at Barry

MIAMI SHORES – Barry University used a 15-hit attack and a five-run fifth inning to defeat #20 Florida Southern, 11-4, and take the opening game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference here Sunday at Feinbloom Field.

Florida Southern (28-16 overall and 10-9 in the SSC) struck first as Jason Sierra singled to lead off the second inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch. After Barry (24-23, 8-14 SSC) evened the score with a solo run in the fourth inning, David Lugo gave the lead back to FSC in the top of the fifth as he smashed his third homer of the season off the scoreboard in left field off Barry starter, Alex Lavandero (7-4).

The lead was short-lived as the Buccaneers jumped on Moccasin starting pitcher Ben Richardson (9-4) for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-2 lead.

The Moccasins pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth as Logan Browning drew a one-out walk and Dominic Brugnoni singled to put runners on first and second. Sierra was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Blake Swann then picked up an RBI the hard way, taking a pitch off the hand to force in Browning. Brugnoni would come in to score on an infield ground out by Lugo to pull the Moccasins with two 6-4.

Barry got the two runs back in the bottom of the sixth on two wild pitches, one from Richardson and one from reliever Brady Arenson.

Florida Southern got one baserunner in the sixth as Browning reached on an error, but that was it as the final seven Moccasin hitters were retired in order by reliever Armando Gonzalez.

Chase Pilato came on in relief of Arenson to pitch the eighth for the Moccasins and allowed three runs, two coming on a triple by Jonathan Quintana.

Florida Southern wraps up the series with Barry in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Monday. The Moccasins will then close out the regular season at home on Friday and Saturday, May 13-14. Prior to the 1 pm doubleheader on May 14, FSC will honor its 10 senior players.
