Baseball Maintains No. 4 Ranking in NCBWA Poll

DALLAS, TX - Florida Southern remained ranked number four in the NCAA Division II national poll as released today by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Moccasins, off to a 13-1 record after Tuesday's 8-1 win over Kentucky Wesleyan, garnered 374 points in the poll.

Azuza Pacific (14-0) held down the number one spot for a second week with 448 points and 17 first-place votes while Delta State (11-1) jumped up four spots from number six to slide into the number two spot. Belmont Abbey (15-2) made a huge leap sliding up from No, 11 to take over the number three spot. Following Florida Southern at number five is St. Thomas Aquinas (4-0), which was ranked seventh last week.

The next five teams include Colorado Mesa (8-4), Minnesota State (0-0), Mercyhurst (2-0), Wingate (13-2), and Tampa (10-2).

In the South Region poll, Delta State takes over the number one slot as Florida Southern falls to number two followed by Tampa, Saint Leo, and Mississippi College.

The Moccasins posted a 2-1 record at Barry University last weekend winning the opening game, 9-2, but falling 18-7 in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader, suffering their first defeat of the season. Florida Southern rebounded in game two, squashing Barry, 19-7.

Florida Southern has ridden the long ball this season, cranking 22 homers on the season (Hayden Marze has six), a total that ranks fifth in the NCAA Division II poll. Logan Browning is second in the Sunshine State Conference with a .467 batting average while Omar Villaman is next at .404 with Dylan Costa close behind at .392.

Browning also leads the pitching staff with a 1.71 ERA and is third in the SSC with 32 strikeouts. The Lakeland native joins J.J. Niekro and Trevor Castell with 3-0 records.

Florida Southern returns to action on Thursday at home at 6 p.m. with game two of its series with Kentucky Wesleyan and will also play the Panthers at 1 p.m. on Friday.
