Mocs Drop Series Finale at Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, FL - Florida Southern College baseball had its bats silenced on Friday in a 7-0 loss at Sunshine State Conference rival Saint Leo in the rubber match of a three-game series at Southard Stadium. The Moccasins (22-25, 8-19) were able to muster just two hits as the Lions (23-24, 12-15) got a complete-game shutout from starter Ryan Nolan to take the series from the Mocs.

Nolan (4-3) struck out six and walked just one as Saint Leo tossed its second complete-game shutout of the series. Cooper Bradford (1-6) took the loss for the Moccasins after allowing five runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. He walked six and struck out three, pitching well until the fourth inning when the Lions struck for four runs on four hits. Saint Leo held Florida Southern to just four baserunners in the game.

Florida Southern will close out its season next week with a three-game series at home against Tampa (May 10-11). The Mocs will recognize their senior class prior to the 6 p.m. contest on May 10.

  • After Southern went down in order in the top of the first, Saint Leo got a leadoff single from Derek Gibree, who advanced to third after two-straight groundouts. A two-out walk put runners at the corners, but Bradford struck out Brett Coffel to end the inning.
  • Christian Maglich singled in the second inning for the Mocs, one of the team's two hits on the day, but Florida Southern was unable to drive in a run. The Lions would plate their first run of the game on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning following two walks and a single, but Bradford retired the final two batters to escape further damage.
  • After a scoreless third and a 1-2-3 top of the fourth, Saint Leo would explode for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Aaron Portee drew a one-out walk and advanced to third following a failed pickoff attempt and a passed ball. Gibree was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat and Portee would score on Amir Wright's single through the right side.
  • Jared Morello followed with an RBI single that chased Bradford from the game, and two more runs would score via one-run singles before Matt Martin struck out Danny Torres to stop the bleeding.
  • Coffel's solo homer to left in the sixth inning made it 6-0, and the Lions also plated a run on Torres' two-out RBI triple in the eighth. The Mocs got just one more hit in the game following Maglich's single in the second when Jacob Teter singled in the seventh. Outside of the pair of singles, Pablo Cabrera's third-inning walk and Zach Scott's hit-by-pitch in the ninth were the only other baserunners for the Mocs.

  • Florida Southern fell to 134-53 all-time against Saint Leo, including a 59-31 record when facing the Lions on the road. The Moccasins are now 13-13 on the road this season.
  • Scott reached base for the 13th-straight game after being hit by a pitch in the ninth. The Moccasins have 11 different players who have reached base in at least 10 consecutive games this year, with Teter's streak of 38 in a row leading the way.

  • Florida Southern closes out its season with a three-game home series against Tampa (May 10-11).
