MELBOURNE, FL - For the second time in three weeks, Florida Southern College men's basketball junior Slinky Jones has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Jones, who also earned the award on Jan. 8, averaged 7.0 points and 5.5 rebounds to help lead the Moccasins to a pair of victories last week. He pulled down 11 rebounds in two games, 10 of which came on the defensive glass, and tallied four blocks and four steals. In Wednesday's win at Tampa, Jones grabbed four rebounds and recorded four steals, and followed that up with seven rebounds and three blocks against Nova Southeastern.
He has recorded multiple blocks in eight different games this year and ranks first in the SSC and 54th nationally with 1.63 blocks per game. He also leads the conference and is 41st in the nation in total blocks (31). As a team, Florida Southern is third in the conference and 53rd nationally in total blocks (70), second in the conference and 45th in defensive rebounds per game (27.79) and leads the SSC while ranking 21st in the country in total rebounds (771).
Jones latest Defensive Player of the Year award marks the fifth time this year that Florida Southern has earned a weekly SSC honor. In addition to his Defensive Player of the Week award earlier this month, Jones is joined by teammates Brett Hanson (POW - 1/1/8; DPOW - 11/27/17) and Jack Rauch (POW - 11/27/17) as the Moccasins to earn weekly conference honors.
The Moccasins return to action on Wednesday when they face Saint Leo at home, and head to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday before wrapping up the month at home against Eckerd on Jan. 31.
