Hanson Named D2CCA South Region Player of the Year; Hinton Named Second Team

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Florida Southern College senior guard Brett Hanson is the 2019-20 Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) South Region Men's Basketball Player of the Year, receiving top billing on the D2CCA All-South Region Team.

Junior forward Jalyn Hinton earned Second Team All-South Region honors.

The D2CCA squad was selected by NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors from institutions and conference offices in the South Region, made up of the Gulf South Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and Sunshine State Conference.

The Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year and tournament Most Valuable Player, Hanson averaged 22.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game for a Moccasin team that ended the year 29-2. For his career, Hanson scored 2,238 points, making him only the third player in school history to reach the 2,000 point threshold. Hanson shot nearly 50 percent from the field, scoring in double-figures in all 31 games this year, including 19 games with at least 20 points, and a career-high 42 points in a win over Lindenwood on Dec. 7.

Hinton earned SSC Defensive Player of the Year honors, as he led all of Division II in blocked shots (95), and blocks per game (3.39). His block total this season is the third highest total in a single season since 1978, and his average is the second highest in that same time frame. Additionally, this season Hinton averaged 15.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

Florida Southern boasted an overall record of 29-2, claimed the SSC regular season title with an 18-2 mark in regular season play, and captured the SSC Tournament title in convincing fashion. The Mocs were riding a 17 game winning streak, entering the NCAA South Region Championship.

The Mocs were ranked No. 5 in Division II, and No. 1 in the South Region. Florida Southern was set to host the South Region bracket of the NCAA Tournament.

The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education.
