Mocs Earn Bid to NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional

INDIANAPOLIS - For the 43rd time in the history of the men's golf program, Florida Southern is headed back to the NCAA Division II Tournament as head coach Doug Gordin's Moccasins will be one of the 10 teams representing the South Region in the South/Southeast Super Regional on May 4-6 at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla. This will be the Mocs 39th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Men's Golf Tournament.

Joining the sixth-seeded and eighth-ranked Moccasins from the Sunshine State Conference in this year's super regional will be No. 1 seeded Nova Southeastern, No. 2 seeded and SSC Champion Lynn, No. 3 seeded Barry, No. 4 seeded and tournament host Saint Leo and No. 8 seeded Florida Tech. The other four spots in the South Region went to three Gulf South Conference schools - No. 5 seeded West Georgia, No. 7 seeded and GSC Champion West Florida and No. 9 seeded North Alabama. The final team from the South Region in this year's Super Regional in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champion Benedict. 

Along with 10 teams from the South Region, the NCAA chose four individuals from the South Region to compete in the super regional as the individuals selected were Delta State's Reed Lindsey, Valdosta State's Chris Rogers, Valdosta State's John Fordham and Rollins' Emil Sorebo.

Joining the 10 schools and four individuals from the South Region will be 10 schools and four individuals from the Southeast Region. The 10 teams selected from the Southeast Region were Peach Belt Conference champion Flagler, Conference Carolinas champion Limestone, South Atlantic Conference champion Tusculum, No. 3 ranked USC-Aiken, Wingate, Columbus State, Georgia Southwestern, North Greenville, Erskine and Georgia College. 

The four individuals from the Southeast Region selected were Lander's Michal Pospisil, Montevallo's Dalton Skinner, Barton's Austin Doerr and Lincoln Memorial's Braden Galyon.

This year's South/Southeast Super Regional features 16 nationally ranked teams in this week's latest Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches' Poll. The nationally ranked teams are - Nova Southeastern (No. 1), Lynn (No. 2), USC Aiken (No. 3), Barry (No. 4), Flagler (No. 5), Florida Southern (No. 8), Saint Leo (No. 9), West Georgia (No. 10), North Alabama (No. 13), Columbus State (No. 15), Florida Tech (No. 17), Georgia Southwestern (No. 19), Wingate (No. 22), Erskine (No. 24) and North Greenville (No. 25). 

Each team will play 18 holes each of the three days for a total of 54 holes and the top six teams from the field (regardless of region) and the top two individuals not on one of those seven teams will advance to the 2015 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship on May 18-22 at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.  

The South/Southeast Regional will begin with a practice round beginning with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at Lake Jovita on Sunday, May 3. The teams will then open the tournament on Monday, May 4 with tee times ranging from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. FSC's five golfers will be paired with Georgia Southwestern (Southeast Region No. 5 seed) and Limestone (Southeast Region No. 6 seed) in the first round and they are scheduled to tee off from the No. 10 tee beginning at 8:20 a.m. with the No. 5 golfer continuing until the No. 1 golfer tees off at 9 a.m.

FSC, who finished third at this season's SSC Championships, owns an NCAA Division II record 12 men's golf championships, with the most recent coming in 2010. Five of those 12 titles have come under Gordin, who is in his 20th season at the helm of the Mocs.

Last season, the Mocs finished 12th at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional at Savannah Quarters Golf Club, but Tim Crouch qualified as an individual after taking home medalist honors at the super regional. Crouch would go on to repeat as the Division Ii National Champion medalist as he fired an even-par 213 for 54 holes at the Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. With his repeat national championship, Crouch became the eighth Moccasin men's golfer to earn an individual national championship and the first Moccasin to win two individual national titles.
