Coultas, Jones and VanDerLaan Named PING All-South Region Selections

NORMAN, Okla. - Florida Southern placed three of its men's golfers on the NCAA Division II PING All-South Region Team chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) that was released by the organization on Thursday afternoon.

The three Mocs named to the PING All-South Region Team were freshmen John Coultas, Jimmy Jones and John VanDerLaan. The PING All-South Region Team consists 23 players, 18 of which came from Sunshine State Conference schools.

It is the first time the Mocs have had three PING All-South Region selections since 2013 when Tim Crouch, Case Gard and Austin Schultz were tabbed by the GCAA.

NCAA Division II National Champion Nova Southeastern and national runner-up Lynn each had four golfers selected, while FSC and Barry were next with three overall selections. The only other schools with multiple All-Region selections were Florida Tech and Saint Leo, as they each had two players selected. 

Coultas, who is a native of Valrico, Fla., earns All-South Region honors after earning First-Team PING/GCAA All-American honors and taking the Phil Mickelson Award as the top freshmen in Division II men's golf. On the season, Coultas led the Mocs with a 71.82 scoring average in 33 rounds and 11 events. He had four Top 5 finishes, including taking home medalist honors at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational during the fall campaign as he shot a 10-under par 203 at the Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ga. He recorded 18 rounds of par or better on the season, including a team season low round of 66 in the first round of the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational. Coultas, who was named a Second-Team All-SSC selection and is finished the year ranked sixth in the Golfstat Division II player rankings, was the Mocs top finisher in four of its 11 tournaments and tied for fourth at this year's NCAA Division II National Championships and was runner-up at the 2015 SSC Men's Golf Championships. 

Jones, who is a native of Tampa, Fla., earns All-South Region honors after recording a 73.00 scoring average in 33 rounds and 11 events on the season. Jones, who was named a Second-Team All-SSC selection, had five Top 10 finishes, including three Top 5 finishes, all of which came during the spring season as he was the Mocs top finisher at four of its six spring events. He opened the spring season with a tie for third place at the Matlock Invitational as he carded a 9-under 207 at Lone Palm and then placed in a tie for third at the Armstrong Pirate Men's Invitational with an even-par 216. Jones, who is ranked 43rd in the latest Division II Golfstat player rankings, then carded a 3-under 213 to finish fifth ay the Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State and then shot a 3-over par 213 to finish place sixth at the Bobcat Invitational. He recorded 13 rounds of par or better on the season, including a low round of 68 at both the Matlock Classic (2nd round) and Southeastern Collegiate (1st round) and placed tied for 33rd at the NCAA Division II National Championships as he shot a six-over 219 for 54 holes at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.

VanDerLaan, who is a native of Southbury, Conn., earns All-South Region honors after posting a 72.36 scoring average in 33 rounds of golf and 11 events. VanDerLaan, who was named a PING/GCAA Division II First-Team All-American and was also tabbed the SSC Freshman of the Year, posted five Top 10 finishes, including taking home medalist honors at both the McDonough Cup hosted by Rollins during the fall campaign and at the SSC Championships at RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla. VanDerLaan, who was the Mocs top finisher in three tournaments, including two of FSC's three postseason events, recorded 15 rounds of par or better and shot a season low round of 67 in the first round of the Matlock Collegiate Classic, the first round of the SSC Championships, the final round of the South/Southeast Super Regional and the final round of stroke play at the NCAA D-II National Championships, where he finished in a tie for 54th place. VanDerLaan, who has been named a finalist for the Jack Nicklaus Division II Player of the Year Award, is ranked 20th in the latest Division II Golfstat player rankings. 

The Moccasin threesome are joined on the PING/GCAA All-South Region Team by Barry's Mike Anderson, Florida Tech's Ray Badenhorst, Barry's Mario Beltran, Florida Tech's Ryan Carter, Barry's Nico Cavero, Lee's Taylor Davis, West Georgia's Corey Evans, Saint Leo's Ryan Gendron, Lynn's Mateo Gomez, Nova Southeastern's Santiago Gomez, Lynn's Keith Greene, West Florida's Juan Miguel Heredia, North Alabama's Forrest Knight, Nova Southeastern's Oscar Lengden, Delta State's Reed Lindsey, Nova Southeastern's Richard Mansell, Lynn's Jose Andres Miranda, Saint Leo's Joey Savoie, Nova Southeastern's Priyanshu Singh and Lynn's Elliott Whitley.
