Jones Named PING Division II Honorable Mention All-American

NORMAN, Okla. - Florida Southern's Jimmy Jones can add All-American to his resume for this past season as the Tampa native and sophomore-to-be was named an Honorable Mention All-America selection to the Division II PING All-America Team chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Tuesday.

A total of 22 golfers from 19 different Division II schools received honorable mention recognition from the GCAA.

Along with naming the PING Division II Honorable Mention All-Americans, the GCAA also released its second and third team All-Americans from the 2014-15 season. The GCAA's first team All-Americans were announced after the completion of the stroke play competition at this year's NCAA Division II National Championships at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.

The Moccasins had two First-Team All-America selections as sophomores-to-be John Coultas (Valrico, FL) and John VanDerLaan (Southbury, CT) were named to the nine member All-America first team.

Jones earns his honorable mention All-America honor after recording a 73.00 scoring average in 33 rounds and 11 events on the season. He had five Top 10 finishes, including three Top 5 finishes, all of which came during the spring season as he was the Mocs top finisher at four of Florida Southern's six spring events. Jones recorded 13 rounds of par or better on the season, including a low round of 68 at both the Matlock Classic (2nd round) and Southeastern Collegiate (1st round) and placed tied for 33rd at the NCAA Division II National Championships as he shot a six-over 219 for 54 holes. 

Jones is joined on the Honorable Mention All-America team by Barry's Mike Anderson, Lynn's Martin Cancino, Barry's Nico Cavero, Ferris State's Ben Cook, USC Aiken's Johnson Holliday, Central Oklahoma's Eric Kline, Central Missouri Travis Mays, Columbus State's Robert Mize, Western New Mexico's Thomas Neve, Midwestern State's Derek Oland, Cal State-Monterey Bay's Ray Richards, IUP's Kenneth Sames, UC-Colorado Springs' Patrick Skakel, Montevallo's Dalton Skinner, Central Missouri's Alex Springer, Cal State-East Bay's Adam Stone, Lewis' Alex Thode, Georgia Southwestern's Nicholas Ward, Lynn's Elliott Whitley, Chico State's Justin Wiles and Dixie State's Kenny You.

The GCAA PING Second-Team All-Americans for 2014-15 are Barry's Mario Beltran, Simon Fraser's Chris Crisologo, Chico State's Alistair Docherty, Lynn's Keith Greene, North Alabama's Forrest Knight, Nova Southeastern's Oscar Lengden, Saint Leo's Joey Savoie and Cal State-Monterey Bay's Carr Vernon.

Meanwhile, the GCAA PING Third-Team All-Americans for 2014-15 are Florida Tech's Ray Badenhorst, Lee's Taylor Davis, Saint Leo's Ryan Gendron, West Florida's Juan Miguel Heredia, Lynn's Jose Andres Miranda, Central Oklahoma's Russ Purser, USC Aiken's Axel Ostensson and Nova Southeastern's Priyanshu Singh. 

With Jones' selection, it marks the first time since 2010 that Florida Southern has had three players earn All-America honors in the same season. In 2010, Matt Stauch was a first team honoree, while Jude Eustaquio earned third team honors and Sheldon Smith was an honorable mention selection.
