BOWLING GREEN, FL – A new season has begun for the top-ranked and defending national champion Florida Southern men's golf team, but the Moccasins will have to wait a little while longer to see where they stand after the first day of the Griffin Invitational. Florida Southern shot a 290 in Monday's first round but the second round was suspended due to darkness.

Leading the way for Florida Southern in the one round that was completed was senior John Coultas with a four-under 68, and senior John VanDerLaan with a 72. Juniors Christian Anderson and Michael VanDerLaan each shot a 75 to account for the team score of 290, and sophomore Chase Ibbotson carded an 80. Freshman Jacob Penny made his collegiate debut with a 72 while competing as one of 15 individuals in the tournament.

Coultas' scorecard show six birdies and two bogeys, and the 3-time All-American ended round one by playing his final nine holes at four-under. Three of his birdies came on the four par-5s at Streamsong Resort's Blue Course. John VanDerLaan picked up four birdies for the Moccasins, as did his brother Michael. Anderson and Penny each recorded three.

Coultas was tied for fifth in the early going, three strokes behind West Florida's Chandler Blanchet (65), and two behind another Argonaut golfer, Henry Westmoreland (66). The 2nd-ranked Argos also got a 69 from Jacob Huizinga and a 71 from Christian Bosso, a group of veterans who combined for 271 (-17) in round one.

In the afternoon, the Moccasins were being led by Mike VanDerLaan, who finished his round with a career-best four-under par 68, while John VanDerLaan also got his round in with a 70. Ibbotson had an 80, and Penny matched his opening round score with another 72. Still on the course for Florida Southern were Coultas, who was four-under with one hole to play, and Anderson, who was five-over with two holes remaining.

The Griffin Invitational concludes Tuesday, with the third round immediately following the conclusion of round two.
