Florida Southern Suffers First Home Loss of 2019 to No. 8 Belmont Abbey

LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College men's lacrosse saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 14-9 loss to No. 8 Belmont Abbey at Moccasin Field on Friday afternoon. The Mocs (5-4, 1-0 SSC) were unable to get the ball past the Abbey (9-1) goalie made 17 saves on 26 shots on goal.  

Jeff Atlas led the offense with three goals, while six additional Mocs recorded a goal in the victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Florida Southern and Belmont Abbey traded a pair of goals each to open the game. Kyle Silverstein gave the Mocs a 1-0 lead at the 13:37 mark of the first quarter. Just over a minute later, Jack Pigott tied the game at 1-1. The Mocs jumped out to a 4-3 lead in a matter of 30 seconds with goals from Justin Dunleavy and Joe Appio. The Abbey's leading scorer, Liam Osbourne closed out the first quarter with a goal to tie the game at 4-4. 
  • Belmont Abbey shut the Mocs out in the second quarter as they made a pair of saves on five total shots by the home team. On a 6-0 run spanning three different quarters, Liam Osbourne gave the visitors a 6-4 lead with two goals to open the second quarter scoring. Osbourne would score three of the Crusaders four goals in the second frame. Belmont Abbey would take an 8-4 lead to the half. 
  • The Abbey's 6-0 run would come to an end the Mocs scoring drought, which started near the end of the first quarter, as Atlas scored his second of three goals on the afternoon. Belmont Abbey would get two back with goals from Bailey Williams and Noah Haas. Atlas would close out the third quarter with his final goal at the 1:23 mark of the third quarter.
  • Nick Gutmann, Sean Nolan, and Dalton Simpson would all score in the final quarter to get the Mocs within four but on an open net in the final minute, Collin Grippo would put the game away to give the Crusaders a 14-9 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Florida Southern dropped to 2-4 all-time against Belmont Abbey. The Mocs are 1-1 in Lakeland and 1-3 in Belmont.    
  • Florida Southern picked up 37 groundballs to Belmont Abbey's 26. FSC was 0-for-2 on man-up chances while BAC was successful on three of five man-up chances. 
  • The Mocs caused 15 of the Abbey's 22 turnovers.
  • Maxwell Freestone made nine saves on 23 shots on goal in net for Florida Southern.
