Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #15 (October 22, 1988)

Florida Southern has had several wins over nationally ranked teams since polls became a regular part of the landscape in the early to mid-80s. What is interesting to note in the case of the Moccasin men's soccer team though is how most of their biggest wins have come on the road. Four times Florida Southern has beaten a top-10 team and only one of those games took place at Barnett Field. Even a win over top-ranked Barry in 2000 was played on the road, so Trevor Clark's performance that night will have to wait for another list to be detailed fully. Instead, the No. 15 game on this list is the first time Florida Southern ever beat a ranked team, and that did occur at Barnett Field in a game against Randolph-Macon on October 22, 1988.

Since Division II soccer polls became common or available, the Moccasins played just six ranked opponents from 1980-87. Not only did they go 0-6, but they did not score a goal in any of them. Four of those games were against perennial national power University of Tampa, but in 1988, the Mocs almost got the best of the Spartans. Tampa came to Barnett Field on October 4 ranked No. 3 in the country and only a Spartan goal in the 35th minute prevented the Moccasins from getting their first win over a ranked opponent right there. The Spartans held on for a 1-0 win, however, spoiling another brilliant game by Moccasin goalkeeper Tim Moore, who had 14 saves.

A little over two weeks later, Florida Southern would have another chance against a different top-20 team and this time got the win. Visiting from Ashland, Virginia, Randolph-Macon came to Barnett Field ranked No. 20 with an 8-2-3 record that included a 2-0 win at Eckerd one day earlier. The Moccasins' record was 3-8-1. The Yellow Jackets had allowed just 11 goals in their first 13 games and held a 1-0 lead over the Moccasins with less than seven minutes to play, but that's when Eric Beall stepped up for the Moccasins and helped bring them from behind for a 2-1 victory that is among the most dramatic they've ever had.

With 6:06 remaining, a cross from Beall put Chris Nolen in position for a header into the upper reaches of the net that tied the score at one. The real drama was yet to come. The Moccasins' final chance to score was not just in the final seconds, it came in the absolute final second. On the receiving end of a pass from Jay Sumner, Beall put Florida Southern ahead with exactly one tick on the clock, rendering the final kickoff a mere formality.

It goes without saying the win over Randolph-Macon was not only the Mocs' first over a ranked team, but the only time they've ever won a game by scoring a goal in true last-second fashion. It was the third and final goal of the season for Beall, who played only one season for the Moccasins.
