Florida Southern's Diego Gimenez has claimed the first Sunshine State Conference Men's Swimmer-of-the-Week award of his career after leading the Moccasins to a 133½ - 71½ victory over Indian River State on Friday (Jan. 15). The junior from Burgos, Spain won both of his individual races and also helped one of Florida Southern's relay teams to another win.
The 400-medley relay was the first race of the day for Gimenez and his performance on the anchor leg helped the Moccasins post a winning time of 3:23.04, which was nearly five seconds faster than the second-place team from Indian River State. He swam his freestyle leg in 46.26 seconds.
Later in the meet, Gimenez won the 50-freestyle in a time of 21.62 seconds, slipping past teammate Marco Palacios. He then went on to win the 200-backstroke in 1:54.09, finishing just 0.29 seconds ahead of another Moccasin swimmer, Evan Coleman. It was the first career backstroke win for Gimenez and gave him two individual wins in the same meet for the first time in his career as well.
Gimenez remains #1 on the Florida Southern times list in both the 50- and 100-freestyle, with NCAA provisional qualifying times in each. He's also a provisional qualifier in the 100-backstroke.
