Southern Tops Florida Tech, 8-1, for First Conference Win

LAKELAND – Florida Southern notched its first Sunshine State Conference win of the season with a 8-1 triumph over visiting Florida Tech here Monday at the Warden Tennis Center.

The win is the first SSC victory of the season for the Moccasins and improves 43rd-ranked Florida Southern's record to 12-7 overall and 1-2 in the SSC while 42nd-ranked Florida Tech falls to 11-8 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Oscar Soderlund and Miguel Alvarez-Hevia starting the winning ways for the Moccasins with an 8-2 win over Aria Candell and Tjimon Louisy at number two doubles while Jose de Sario and Brian Slovinik kept it going with an 8-4 win at number one doubles over Ricardo Corona and JJ Clark. Fabian Lundberg and Arthur Viallaneix made it a clean sweep with am 8-6 win vs. Wade Ball and Majed Alshaikh at number three.

"It was a great team performance and an awesome 3-0 sweep in the doubles," said FSC Head Coach Trey Heath.

Alvarez-Hevia picked up the Moccasins first singles win, downing Alshaikh, 6-4, 6-2, at number four while de Sario clinched the match victory with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at number two over Corona, the number 20th ranked singles player in the South Region. 

Slivinik downed Carpinelli, 6-3, 6-3, at number three singles while Viallaneix topped Ball, 7-6 (8-4), 6-4 at number five. Lundberg squeezed out a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Candadell, who is ranked 19th in the South Region.

Foresight Okungbowa spoiled the Moccasins' sweep with a 7-6 (8-5), 7-5 win over Soderlund at number six singles.

Florida Southern will try to make it back-to-back conference wins when it host Rollins on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Warden Tennis Center.
