Nine Moccasins Named ITA Scholar-Athletes

SKILLMAN, N.J. - Nine Moccasins have been named 2015-16 Scholar-Athletes as announced Thursday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In addition the Moccasins squad was named an ITA All-Academic Team. The Moccasins, coached by Trey Heath, finished the 2016 Spring semester with a 3.51 grade point average.

The nine Moccasins named Scholar-Athletes are: sophomore Miguel Alvarez-Hevia (business management major), freshman Mark Bucknam (psychology), sophomore Lance Francisco (business administration), junior Fabian Lundberg (business adminstration), junior Laurent Mailloux (economics & finance), sophomore Matt Matsuyama (sports management), junior Matt McNish (music management), sophomore Brian Slivonik (biology), and freshman Oscar Soderlund (business).

Lundberg, Mailloux, Matsuyama, McNish, and Slivonik are repeat honorees having been named Scholar-Athletes in 2014-15. Mailloux and Slivonik posted 4.00 grade point averages this past semester.

Florida Southern is one of 60 Division II teams to earn All-Academic Team honors, and one of seven from the Sunshine State Conference to be so recognized. The nine Scholar-Athletes from Florida Southern matched Florida Tech for most in the SSC. Overall, more than 4,200 scholar-athletes and 700 teams across all divisions were honored by the ITA,

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 sand spring 2016).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
