YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Blaine Miller advanced to the semifinals in the singles competition of the Mountain Lion Men's Tennis Invitational played here Sunday at the Bob & Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex.
Miller opened play on Saturday with a 6-0, 7-6 (5), victory against Joseph Horne of Belmont Abbey before posting a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, win over Jared Bones of the University of North Georgia, also on Saturday. On Sunday, Miller fell 6-1, 6-0 to Raul Quevedo of Young Harris in Sunday's semifinals. Quevedo went on to take the singles title when his opponent, Alex Pavel of Young Harris, defaulted due to injury.
Also on Saturday, Matt Matsuyama dropped a 6-2, 6-1, match to Quevedo, while Brian Wilson was topped, 6-2, 6-2, by Bones. Mark Bucknam, was downed, 6-0, 6-2, by Nicki Graetz of Young Harris, while Derek Bell, had to default his match due to injury to Zach Blyther of Belmont Abbey. Bell had one the first set, 7-5, before trailing 4-1 in the second and suffering the injury.
Finally, in Saturday's singles, Laurent Mailloux was defeated, 6-2, 6-4, by Alex Pavel of Young Harris.
In Saturday's consolation matches in the singles competition, Connor Angell lost 6-0, 6-1, to Derrick Kwok of Belmont Abbey, who had a first round bye in the back draw. In addition, Lance Francisco fell, 6-1, 6-2, to Carlos Moreno of Belmont Abbey.
In doubles, Matsuyama and Bucknam dropped an 8-2 match to Belmont Abbey's Pavel and Quevedo, while Mailloux and Miller lost, 8-6, to North Georgia's Kloklow and Bones, while Bell and Wilson were defeated 8-6, by Young Harris' Graetz and Daniel Tiboldi.
In doubles consolation, Francisco and Angell lost, 8-5, to Kowk and Adam Mithwani of Belmont Abbey.
The Mountain Lion Invitational concludes the Moccasins' Fall tennis season.
