Men's Tennis Posts 6-3 Win Over Queens (NY)

LAKELAND - The Florida Southern men's tennis team kepts it winning ways going with a 6-3 win over Queens (NY) Friday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win is the Moccasins' third in a row bringing their record to 6-5 on the season, including a 6-1 mark in the month of March.

"We have put ourselves in a good position," said coach Greg Van Emburgh. "I know the guys will be ready when we start conference play next weekend."

Florida Southern won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches from Queens which started the season 10-0, but has dropped its last two matches to stand at 10-2.

Blaine Miller and Victor Ahlbeck got the Moccasins on the board first with an 8-3 win over Roman Laga and Camilo Arias at number three doubles while Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Matt Matsuyama then topped Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez, 8-3, at number one giving FSC a 2-0 lead. However, Moccasins Tim Becker and Derek Bell fell, 8-4, at number two doubles to Cosme Jubera and Richard Sec.

In singles Alvarez-Hevia downed Jubera, 6-3, 6-1 at number two while Queens' Jose Zurro downed Oscar Sodelund, 6-1, 6-4 at number six and Sec defeated Matsuyama, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) at number five to tie the match at 3-all.

Alvaro Arias then defeated Mendez, 6-1, 7-5 at number one and Becker triumphed 6-4, 6-0 over Hugo Andrade at number four to give the match to the Moccasins. Finally, Ahlbeck edged Laga, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), for the final Moccasin point.

Florida Southern returns to Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday, March 24 on the road at Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, FL for a 3:30 p.m. match.
