BOCA RATON – Florida Southern did all of its scoring Friday in the third inning and then followed junior pitcher Brandi Jones the rest of the way. Scattering six hits without a walk, Jones tossed her first complete game shutout of the season, and the Moccasins got RBI from junior Erica Morrissey and freshman Jessica Trana to defeat Lynn 3-0 in their Sunshine State Conference opener.

The top of the third inning featured doubles by Morrissey and freshman Zierra Flodman, though it was started by a 1-out infield single by senior Jordan Alexander. Morrissey's double into the leftfield corner moved her to third, and from there she was able to score on a wild pitch. Flodman then doubled in Morrissey for the second run, and after another wild pitch by Francais Olexa, she scored on a ground out by Trana to make the score 3-0.

The Moccasins (7-2, 1-0 SSC) put together another threat in the fifth inning with nearly the same group of batters. They loaded the bases with an Alexander walk, a single by Morrissey and another single by senior Maggie Roberts. But Olexa worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to keep it a 3-0 game.

The Moccasins ended up with eight hits off Olexa, with Morrissey collecting two of those. They also had Roberts reach safely in three of her four plate appearances with a hit and two walks, and Alexander reached twice with one hit and one walk. In addition to giving up three runs, Olexa also walked three and struck out three as she fell to 2-4 on the season.

Lynn had six hits off Jones, but they came in six different innings. Two of those were infield singles and another was a bloop double that was pushed in by the wind and fell into short left center. The Knights (5-8, 0-1) did come close to scoring in the bottom of the seventh when Elizabeth Diaz reached on one of the infield hits and an error put Madi White on base right behind her with one out. When Olexa lined a pitch into short right center, the shutout was in danger of ending, but Alexander came streaking in from center to make a shoestring catch and force the runners to scramble back to first and second. Jones then got Sara Vazquez to ground into a fielder's choice to third that ended the game.

Jones finished with five strikeouts and no walks in improving her record to 4-1. While it was her first official shutout of the season, it was her second consecutive start without allowing a run. She pitched six innings earlier in the week to beat Western Ontario 7-0.

Florida Southern and Lynn will conclude their 3-game series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
