POLK CITY, Fla. - Florida Southern College water ski kicked off its 2019 season with a dual meet against Rollins on Saturday at Action Water Sports in Polk City. The Moccasins, who were shorthanded on the women's side, fell to the Tars by a final score of 955.0 - 695.0. The teams tied in the slalom (355 points), but Rollins came away with wins in the trick and jump competitions to win the event.
A solid effort by Jamie Calhoun on the men's side gave Southern a victory in the men's slalom. Calhoun, who picked up four buoys at 39.5 off, won the event with 90 points, while Landon Geels tied for third. Tanguy Dailland won the men's trick category with a score of 5,970 and Alex Gaharan won the men's jump with a mark of 142 feet (43.2 meters) but Rollins, which brought more skiers to the event than Florida Southern, was able to win the trick and jump competitions.
On the women's side, the Tars swept all three events but had a huge advantage in numbers by fielding five skiers to Florida Southern's two. Much of the team on both the men's and women's side for Southern were not available as they had traveled home during the campus closure caused by Hurricane Dorian. Even still, Kelley Breeden took second in the slalom by picking up 0.50 buoys ar 38 off to record 60 points.
The Moccasins are back in action at the end of the month when they compete in the NCWSA East Regionals in Greenwood, S.C. on Lake Greenwood.
