Kalaydjiev Named SSC Defensive Player of the Week

MELBOURNE, Fla. - After helping lead Florida Southern College women's basketball to a pair of wins to open Sunshine State Conference action, sophomore Bekki Kalaydjiev has been named as the SSC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

Kalaydjiev averaged 4.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 steals per game in wins over Embry-Riddle (65-49) and Barry (59-54). The win at ERAU snapped a three-game road losing streak to the Eagles, while the win over Barry marked the fourth time this season that the Mocs have held an opponent to less than 60 points.

In Wednesday's triumph at Embry-Riddle, Kalaydjiev had four points, five rebounds, one block, and a career-high six steals. She followed that up with five points, five rebounds, and two steals against Barry. Kalaydjiev is the second-straight Defensive Player of the Week winner for the Moccasins, joining teammate Julia Jenike who won the award last week. Kalaydjiev currently ranks first in the SSC in steals per game (2.3) and is 10th in total defensive rebounds (24).

Kalaydjiev's Defensive Player of the Week honor makes her the sixth student-athlete in program history to earn the award since the conference began Defensive Player of the Week honors during the 2015-16 campaign. Former Moccasins Jensen Blassage and Gianna Vastola also won SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors once in their careers, while Mariah Harris was a two-time winner and Anja Fuchs-Robetin won a program-record six.

Florida Southern hits the road this week for games against Northwest Missouri State (Nov. 29) and Missouri Western State (Nov. 30).
