Florida Southern Tops No. 8 Queens

CHARLOTTE, NC - Florida Southern College women's lacrosse picked up an 11-8 victory over No. 8 Queens on Saturday afternoon to grab its fifth-straight win.

The No. 5 Moccasins (8-2) raced out to an early lead and never trailed as they topped the Royals (4-1) for the sixth-straight time.

• Florida Southern got on the board early when Kendall Kerge scored with 25:47 to go in the first half. Emily Santoli added a second goal just a minute and a half later to put the Mocs up by two goals. Cayla Shawfield had the assist on both scores.
• Queens answered with its first goal at th 20:09 mark of the first half, but the Moccasins scored three-straight goals in the next 18 minutes to jump out to a 5-1 lead. The Royals responded with a pair of goals in the final 19 seconds of the half to make it 5-3 at the break.
Meghan O'Brien and Catherine DeKorte found the back of the net in the beginning of the second half to push Florida Southern's lead back to four goals (7-3). Queens would score again with nine minutes to play, but the Mocs reeled off three-straight to make it 10-4 with just over three minutes to play.
• The Royals mounted a furious comeback in the final three minutes, scoring four consecutive goals to pull within two (10-8) with 48 seconds remaining. Kerge would tack on an insurance goal with 28 seconds left to make the final 11-8.
• Florida Southern finished with a narrow 23-22 edge in shots, and a 19-17 advantage in ground balls. The Royals won 13-of-21 draw controls and converted 13-of-15 clear attempts.

• Florida Southern improved to a perfect 6-0 all-time against Queens, including 3-0 when facing the Royals on the road. The Moccasins improved to 45-6 all-time in the month of March, and have won eight-straight games in March.
• Kerge has now scored 21 goals on just 34 shots this year. She has found the back of the net on 61.8 percent of her shots, and 29 of her shots (85.3 percent) have come on goal.
• Three different Moccasins scored multiple goals in the game including Kerge (3), DeKorte (2), and O'Brien (2). Santoli and Shawfield each tallied two assists. Alanna Zambetti got the start in goal and picked up her fourth win of the season by making four saves.

• Florida Southern will play three home games next week. The Moccasins will face Bloomsburg (March 13), Indiana-PA (March 15) and Seton Hill (March 18). The Mocs open conference play on March 25 at Saint Leo.
