Volleyball Sweeps Florida Tech to Cap Perfect Weekend

LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College volleyball ran its home winning streak to 23-straight matches in a dominant 3-0 win over visiting Florida Tech in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins (8-6, 3-3 SSC) rolled to a 25-7 win in the first set and used that momentum to pick up their second win of the weekend. The Panthers (4-10, 1-5) dropped their third-straight contest.

Whitney Drost (11) and Rachael Martin (10) led the Mocs in kills and Florida Southern was able to provide rest for many of its starters by putting in several of its bench players in for the third set. Tierra Porter and Anica Popadic helped Southern outblock the Panthers 9-5. The Moccasins are back in action next weekend with matchups against Palm Beach Atlantic (Sept. 28) and Nova Southeastern (Sept. 29), and finish a five-match homestand on Oct. 2 against Saint Leo.

  • Florida Southern dominated the first set by racing out to a 9-1 lead and was never in trouble as it cruised to a 25-7 first-set win. The Mocs actually led by as many as 18 points (22-4) in the late stages, and Porter hammered home the set point to give FSC a 1-0 match lead.
  • The Panthers were able to snag an early advantage in the second set by snagging a 5-3 lead, but the Moccasins rallied for five-straight points to take an 8-5 advantage. It would be all the momentum that Florida Southern would need as Hailey Williams put down the set-winning kill to make the final 25-15 and give the Mocs a 2-0 lead.
  • Florida Tech put up an incredible fight in the third set, as the Mocs narrowly won by a 32-20 final. Florida Southern took an early 9-3 lead, but FIT rallied to tie things at 11-11 and the battle was on. The Moccasins looked as if they had the edge when they went up 20-18 late in the set and had the Panthers on the brink when Drost laid down a kill to give Southern set point at 24-23. However, a back-and-forth bout would ensue as both teams squandered chances to put the other away. In the end, Gabby Fresh's service ace proved to be the difference in a wild third set.
  • Florida Southern hit .244 on the attack and held Florida Tech to just .058. The Moccasins held the Panthers without a player in double-digit kills, and recorded a whopping seven service aces. Fresh led the Mocs with 21 digs, while Bethany Besancenez recorded 26 assists.

  • Florida Southern improved to 67-7 all-time against Florida Tech, including 37-1 at home. The Mocs extended their home winning streak to 23-straight matches dating back to last September. FSC has also won 15-straight SSC home contests, a streak that dates back to Oct. 28, 2016. The Moccasins have won 17-straight home matches against Florida Tech.
  • Mattson's upped her career kill total 1,870 career kills and needs just 21 more to move into fourth in school history in career kills.
  • Besancenez has recorded 4,531 career assists and needs 1,199 to set the school record for career assists.

  • Florida Southern will take on No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 and will face Nova Southeastern on Sept. 29. The Mocs' five-match homestand wraps up against Saint Leo on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
