Mocs Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Spartans

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College volleyball took a set against defending NCAA DII National Champion Tampa but fell 3-1 on Tuesday night at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins (6-19, 2-13 SSC) hit well early against the Spartans (20-6, 13-2 SSC) but fell behind in the final sets. The Mocs will play the last home match of the season against Rollins on Thursday, Nov. 7 on Senior Night.

  • Set one started with alternating points as the two sides had tie scores at the 3 through 7 marks of the set. Tampa began to pull away at 7-7, earning an 11-4 run to go ahead, 18-11. Southern rallied back, however, scoring seven-straight points to tie the match at 18. Then, with the set tied at 20, the Mocs scored four straight to earn set point. Tampa rallied but the Mocs emerged set one winners, 25-23. The Moccasins had a .357 hitting percentage in set one.
  • After a 1-0 start for the Moccasins in set two, the Spartans responded with 16-7 run. The Moccasins would draw within four twice in the set (19-15, 20-16), but could not close the gap as Tampa took set two, 25-18.
  • Set three saw both teams level at 6-6 before the Spartans won five straight, forcing a Moccasin timeout. Tampa continued their run to earn set point at 24-15, and despite a 5-0 run from the Mocs closed out the set, 25-20.
  • The two sides exchanged points and held tie scores through the 6-6 mark of the fourth set. From there Tampa earned an 8-2 run to go ahead 14-8 and force a Moccasin timeout. Tampa would close out the set with an 11-8 run to take set four, 25-16, and the match 3-1.
  • Ali Travis and Lena Bondar led the team with 12 kills each, followed by Raeley Matthews with 11. Travis also led the team with 18 digs while Beatrice Formilan recorded 14 and Annie Collins 10. Matthews had three service aces and Tierra Porter led the team with four blocks.

  • Tampa now leads the all-time series, 72-58, though the Moccasins still maintain a 32-39 record at home against the Spartans.
  • Travis has now recorded double-digit kills in five-straight matches. In that span, she has tallied 73 kills and is averaging 3.65 kills per set.
  • Formilan has totaled 200 digs in the past ten matches, averaging 5.41 digs per set. If the season ended today her average of 4.90 digs per set would place her third in program history for a single season behind leader Courtney Veasey's 2004 season (5.33).

  • Southern will have the last home match of the season on Thursday with a 7 p.m. Senior Night contest against Rollins.
