Formilan Finishes Top Five in Program History for Digs as Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Sophomore libero Beatrice Formilan cemented herself in the top five in program history for digs per set in a season as Florida Southern College volleyball fell 3-1 in its season finale to Barry University on Saturday night at the Health and Sports Center. The Moccasins (7-30, 3-17 SSC) kept the match close in the first three sets but could not stage the comeback as the Buccaneers (20-11, 13-7 SSC) hit .457 in the fourth set to take the season series sweep.

  • Set one started with Barry holding a slight edge over Florida Southern with a 5-4 lead before the Buccaneers blasted off on an 11-2 run that put them up 16-6. The home side held strong until 20-9, when the Moccasins rattled off a 14-3 run to tie the set at 23. Barry scored the next two points to take the set, 25-23.
  • The Mocs flipped the script in set two by taking advantage of a 5-4 start to turn their own 10-6 lead over the Bucs. Barry responded with a 13-6 run that gave them a 19-16 lead. The Mocs battled back and, with Barry leading the set 23-21, earned four-straight points on three kills and an ace to take the set, 25-23, and tie the match at one.
  • Set three saw a close, back-and-forth affair with ten tie scores and five lead changes. The Mocs earned three straight after a 4-4 tie score that saw the Bucs respond with a 4-0 run to take the 8-7 lead. The lead flipped between both sides, with the Mocs regaining a margin of two at the 14-12 mark. The Bucs gained control with the score tied at 16, never trailing from that point on to take a 25-22 third set.
  • The narrative stayed with Barry as they went ahead 7-3 in the fourth set and never trailed. The Bucs earned their largest margin at the 16-6 mark and held on to that buffer as they took set four, 25-15, and the match, 3-1.
  • Raeley Matthews led the team with 13 kills, followed by Ali Travis (12) and Rachael Martin (10), the latter of which hit .375 for the night. Martin also talllied six total blocks, while defensively Formilan earned 21 digs and Matthews added another 13. Mika Garza tallied 34 assists on the night.

  • Despite the loss, the Moccasins still lead the all-time series, 40-36.
  • Formilan has totaled 294 digs in the past 15 matches, hitting double figures in each contest and averaging 5.16 digs per set. Her season average of 4.86 digs per set places her fourth in program history for a single season behind leader Courtney Veasey's 2004 season (5.33), Gabby Fresh in 2018 (4.92) and Brindl Langley in 2017 (4.91). Formilan recorded double-digit digs in all but one match that she played this season and tallied over 15 digs in 17 matches.
  • Travis has recorded double-digit kills in nine of her last 10 matches. She has tallied 150 kills in 40 sets, good for a 3.75 kills per set average.
  • Matthews recorded her first-ever double-double with 13 each of kills and digs.
