Women’s Cross Country Set For South Region Championships

LAKELAND, Fla. - After a strong third place finish at the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Championships two weeks ago, Florida Southern women's cross country is set to compete in the NCAA South Region Championships on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Holloway Park in Lakeland.

The Mocs enter the race ranked fifth in the region and are coming off strong performances at the SSC Championships, where Sarah Zamot was named to the All-SSC First Team while Hannah Flemming, Hannah Nelson and Ysabella Guerra were named to the All-SSC Second Team.

Florida Southern is looking for their first South Region Trophy, having come in second three times (1998, 1999, 2001). The team is also looking for their fourth trip to the National Championships, and their first since 2006. Last year, the team finished fourth behind a 10th place finish from Addison Cantor and an 11th place finish from Flemming. Zamot finished in 38th last year while Nelson and Guerra came in 40th and 12st, respectively.

The top three teams will secure a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championships, which is set to take place at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, Calif. On Nov. 28.

Zamot has led the Mocs in every race this season while setting personal records in the 5k, 18:17.1 at the Royals Cross Country Challenge on Oct. 11, and in the 6k, on Oct. 26, where she turned in a 22:39.0 time at the SSC Championships. Flemming finished second for the Mocs on two occasions, a 60th place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28, where she turned in a time of 24:11.5 and an 11th place finish at the SSC Championships, where she finished in 23:30.3.

Nelson finished second for Southern at the UF Mountain Dew Invite on Sept. 14 where she crossed the line in 19:28.8, good enough for 42nd overall. She also finished third three times for the Mocs, including a 92nd place performance, where she recorded a personal best 18:59.7 at the Royals Cross Country Challenge.  Guerra finished second for Florida Southern at the Royals Cross Country Challenge, where her 18:44.1 time was good enough for 62nd overall and a new personal best. She also finished third for the team at the UF Mountain Dew Invite, where she crossed the line in 44th with a time of 19:31.1.

This year's region field is comprised of 21 teams including two nationally ranked teams, No. 8 Lee (Tenn.) and No. 19 Tampa. All ten teams ranked in the Week 6 USTFCCCA South Region Poll will be in attendance.
